There is no joy greater than seeing your children come into this world. At the same time, pregnancy causes permanent changes to mommy’s body that exercise and diet alone are unlikely to correct.
A weight gain of 30 pounds is typical during pregnancy. This means that extra skin and fat must be made in the breast, abdomen, thighs and buttocks to cover the baby, breast milk and new fat made during pregnancy. In fact, the "pregnancy glow" of the face is the extra skin and fat of the face that occurs with pregnancy.
Regardless of where the extra skin is produced, it will never go away with exercise or dieting alone because weight loss can only reduce fat volume, not skin excess. This is why all women after pregnancy always have extra skin in these areas, no matter how much weight they lose or exercise they perform.
However, the most profound change of pregnancy is not merely the extra skin and fat, but the extra laxity of the deep supporting (connective) tissues. The body's deepest structural tissues are fibrous (tough and leather-like), not-muscular. These deep fibrous layers support and lift the overlying muscle, fat and skin and create a youthful appearance. During pregnancy, hormones are made which permanently stretch these tissues. Since these tissues are not muscular, exercise and diet can not re-tighten them. Only surgery can re-tighten loose fibrous support tissues of the abdomen, breast, face, etc.
At the Chicagoland Center for Cosmetic Surgery, Mommy Makeovers is what we do. In the breast this may mean lifting and augmenting the breast; reducing and/or elevating a droopy nipple and/or breast; or correcting a breast size difference. In the abdomen, a tummy tuck will remove excess skin and fat, but it is the re-tightening of the abdomen that causes the "tight" hourglass appearance of the waist. In the face, a mini ("lunch-hour") or conventional face lift creates lift and tightness. Liposuction with fat transfer may be used to augment the breast, buttock, lips, and face or treat wrinkles.
Extra hair production and skin changes are common with pregnancy and may include spider veins, skin discoloration, brown or yellow patches, acne, skin tags, darkening of nipples, moles, etc. Laser resurfacing of discolored areas, skin tightening with fractional laser and permanent hair removal are some of the most common Mommy Makeovers we perform at the Chicagoland Center for Cosmetic Surgery.
In the patient shown above, the after picture is while the patient is on the operating room table. You can see the incision sites around the breasts and abdomen. The breast incisions will not be seen when she is sitting or standing. Saline implants may also be inserted via the navel, which means no scars around the breasts (see our Breast Augmentation section for more details and photos). The abdominoplasty scar is shown here and is well below the bikini line. Within one month, the abdominoplasty scar is barely visible. To see an abdominoplasty scar look at the Tummy Tuck section or Weight Loss section of our web site).
